For the week:

Magnet “The Simple Life” (2007)genre: Space Folk.
Band of Horses “Everything All The Time” (2006)genre: American Indie Rock. Excellent debut. Some folks have likened BoH to My Morning Jacket. But other than the lead singer’s voice, I don’t hear the similarities…other than they’re both good.
Third Eye Blind “Out Of The Vein” (2003)genre: Alternative Rock.
Cantinero “Championship Boxing” (2004)genre: Indie Rock.
Queens Of The Stone Age “Songs For The Deaf” (2002)genre: Chunky Desert Rock.
Muse “Black Holes & Revelations” (2006)genre: Space Metal.
Brett Anderson “Brett Anderson” (2007)genre: Emoschlock.
Joy Division “The Complete BBC Recordings” (2000)genre: Post-Punk.
June & The Exit Wounds “A Little More Haven Hamilton, Please” (1998)genre: American Indie Pop.
Keane “Under the Iron Sea” (2006)genre: Emoschlock.
Scissor Sisters “Ta-Dah!” (2006)genre: Cabaret Disco.
The Colourfield “Deception” (1987)genre: Modern Rock.

For the week:

The Lovetones “Meditations” (2005)genre: neo-60’s Pop.
Bee Gees “Bee Gees Greatest” (1979)genre: 70’s Pop.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “B.R.M.C.” (2000)genre: Shoegazer Blues.
Long-View “Mercury” (2003)genre: Emoschlock.
Arctic Monkeys “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (2006)genre: British Power Pop.
Queensrÿche “Operation: Mindcrime II” (2006)genre: Metal. As everyone says, this does not come close to the majesty of the original “O:M.” However, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this.

Thompson Twins “Into The Gap” (1984)genre: New Wave.

For the week:

Gomez “How We Operate” (2006)genre: BritPop/Emoschlock.
Erin McKeown “Sing You Sinners” (2006)genre: Pop Jazz.
Aldo Nova “Subject…Aldo Nova” (1983)genre: 80’s Synth Rock.
Kelly Jones “Only The Names Have Changed” (2007)genre: BritPop. Excellent excellent EXCELLENT album. Kelly Jones is my hero.
Nine Inch Nails “With Teeth” (2005)genre: Industrial Goth. Has Trent Reznor ever wrote a song about rainbows and ponies? I suppose if the rainbow was a large death ray, and it killed all the ponies…waitaminute…I think I just wrote a NIN tune. Oh yeah, he’s in love with one of the ponies, too.
Arctic Monkeys “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (2006)genre: British Power Pop.
Mew “And The Glass Handed Kites” (2005)genre: Prog Rock.
Athlete “Beyond The Neighbourhood” (2007)genre: Emoschlock. Athlete have gone the way of Coldplay and Keane. They’re no longer the cheeky lads I loved from the get-go. Still, it’s a decent album. Very safe.
Death Cab For Cutie “Transatlanticism” (2003)genre: American Indie.
Magnet “The Simple Life” (2007)genre: Space Folk.
Serena-Maneesh “Serena-Maneesh” (2006)genre: Shoegazer.
Mansun “Six” (1998)genre: BritPop.

This week, a lot of Folk. Am I aging? Well, yeah…

Ryan Adams “Love Is Hell, Pt. 2” (2003)genre: Folk Rock.
Magnet “The Simple Life” (2007)genre: Space Folk.
The Stills “Without Feathers” (2006)genre: Canadian Indie. I’ve tried many times to get into this album, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Their first is one the best albums of the past decade. This one is not.
Kings of Convenience “Riot On An Empty Street” (2004)genre: Norwegian Bossa Nova Folk.
Turin Brakes “The Optimist LP” (2001)genre: Modern Folk.
Marissa Nadler “Songs III: Bird On The Water” (2006)genre: Folk.
Mew “And The Glass Handed Kites” (2005)genre: Prog Rock. This has been in heavy rotation as of late. It’s so different from anything I own, yet I’m completely hooked.
Midlake “The Trials Of Van Occupanther” (2006)genre: Folksy Americana. This is a very nice album. It sounds both familiar and entirely original. They played at the Doug Fir last Saturday. But I, unfortunately, missed them.
Queen “News Of The World” (1977)genre: Glam Rock.
Amusement Parks On Fire “Amusement Parks On Fire” (2004)genre: American Indie Rock.
Frank Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim “Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim” (1967)genre: Bossa Nova.
