Music Rotation — 18 Feb

For the week:

Dokken “Under Lock and Key” (1985)genre: Hair Metal. “I’m the HUNTER! Searching for the things that I might never find. AGAIN!“Love it.
Stereophonics “Pull The Pin” (2007)genre: British Rock. Kelley Jones applies his tried and true mastery of hooky four-chord Power Rock to produce another winner. Familiar, but still vital to any Streophonics fan.
Starsailor “On The Outside” (2005)genre: BritPop. I just picked this up. It pays immediate dividends. It rocks more than their previous two, which I would categorize as Emoschlock. The songs on this one are much more aggressive and anthemic.
My Morning Jacket “Z” (2005)genre: American Indie Rock.
Maps “We Can Create” (2007)genre: Hi-Fi Indie Buzz.
Third Eye Blind “Out Of The Vein” (2003)genre: American Alternative Rock.
Til Tuesday “Welcome Home” (1986)genre: Anti-Prozac Pop.
Sly & The Family Stone “Fresh” (1973)genre: R&B.

1 2 3 Book Meme

Posted in memes at 8:10 pm by berzerkeleyan

Tagged by Fridge. So here goes:

Instructions:

  1. Grab the nearest book (that is at least 123 pages long).
  2. Open to page 123.
  3. Go down to the fifth sentence.
  4. Type in the following three sentences.
  5. Tag five people.

The three sentences are as follows:

“Why did the crowd riot that night? How could a piece of music move a crowd to violence? This is The Rite’s secret.”
–Jonah Lehrer “Proust Was a Neuroscientist” (2007)

I haven’t started this book yet. It’s sitting on the bedside table, along with ten other books in the queue (Obama’s latest, “The Kite Runner,” “Freakonomics,” “Think,” “The Lovely Bones,” “Krakatoa,” “This Is Your Brain on Music,” “The Futurist,” and “Apathy…and other small victories.” I think the last title best explains why I’ve been such a slow reader as of late.

I’m not tagging five people. But I will tag Christina.

For the week:

Depeche Mode “Playing the Angel” (2005)genre: Synthpop.
This Mortal Coil “It’ll End In Tears” (1984)genre: Goth.
Belle & Sebastian “The Boy With The Arab Strap” (1998)genre: Twee Pop.
Cocteau Twins “The Pink Opaque” (1987)genre: Dream Pop.
Mogwai “EP+6” (2000)genre: Post Rock.
Foo Fighters “One By One” (2002)genre: Power Rock.
Magnet “The Tourniquet” (2005)genre: Space Folk.
The La’s “The La’s” (1990)genre: 60’s Mod Revival.
Stereophonics “Performance And Cocktails” (1999)genre: BritPop.
Sting “Nothing Like The Sun” (1987)genre: Pop.
Radiohead “In Rainbows” (2007)genre: Prog Rock. This is such a vast improvement over their last album, “Hail to the Thief.” Whereas that album was like a piece of modern art — inasmuch as someone had to explain why it was good, as opposed to just knowing it — this album doesn’t hide its brilliance. Add to that the fact that I negotiated a $4.50 purchase price when it was first released, and it is indispensable.
Isaac Hayes “Hot Buttered Soul” (1968)genre: R&B.
Garbage “Bleed Like Me” (2005)genre: Angy Grrl.
Turin Brakes “Dark On Fire” (2007)genre: Folk.
Hall & Oates “Rock ‘n Soul, Pt. 1” (1983)genre: Pop.
Maps “We Can Create” (2007)genre: Electronic Indie Fuzz.

Kiss “Unmasked” (1980)genre: 70’s Arena Rock.
Outkast “Speakerboxx” (2003)genre: Hip Hop.
Mr. Mister “Welcome To The Real World” (1985)genre: Pop. Had to remove the figurative dust from this one. It’s probably been since before college that I last heard this. It’ll probably be another twenty years before I play it again.
Def Leppard “Adrenalize” (1992)genre: Hair Metal.
Gene “Revelations” (1999)genre: BritPop.
The Feeling “Twelve Stops and Home” (2007)genre: Emoschlock.
